In order to work as a nurse in the U.K, you will need to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The initial application is to confirm eligibility is done online. This should be done as soon as possible by candidates hoping to take up employment in the U.K. The cost of the above is £140/ paid directly to the Nursing & Midwifery council and this amount is non-refundable.


Once applicants have passed the eligibility assessment, they will be asked to sit Part I of the test of competence . This is a multiple choice computer based test (CBT) that can be taken in test centres all over the world. This is booked through Pearson VUE. This test can also be sat by candidates beginning the process of seeking employment in the U.K.  The test is valid for 2 years and candidates must complete the remaining application process within 2 years of successfully passing the CBT.


After completion of the above the candidate is eligible to accept a position in the U.K. and will be invited to sit 6-stage OSCE on arrival in the U.K.  The OSCE is held at

  • University of Northampton
  • Oxford Brookes
  • Ulster University

Identification check
Applicants required to attend face-to -face ID check at test centre on the day of the OSCE. They must provide original versions of documents.
Nurses are eligible to register with the NMC immediately after qualifying.


Applicants must provide evidence of English.
English language tests accepted by NMC:

  • International English Language Test System (IELTS)- Overall score of at least 7
  • Occupational English Test (OET)- of at least B grade
  • A recent pre-registration nursing qualification which was taught and examined in English
  • Registration and practice of at least one year in a country where English is the first and native language and English language assessment was required for registration.

  • Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE): £794/
